Interlegal History

In 1983 some French lawyers decided that it was time for them to look across international borders for relationships with lawyers from other jurisdictions, as their clients become more and more international and the need for involvement of foreign lawyers was rapidly becoming prevalent. It took 2 years to find the right law firms, and in 1985 negotiations began between French, Spanish and Portuguese lawyers with a view to forming the first ever European Economic Interest Grouping (or EEIG) of Lawyers. These negotiations led to the signing of the first network in Lisbon in 1987 by lawyers from Spain, The Netherlands, Portugal, England, France, Italy and Germany whereby they would work together under the title "North-South Network" or "Nord-Sud Experts Reseau". Lawyers from Denmark, Algeria, Belgium and Morocco, although not present, indicated that they wished to join.

It took until 1988, when in Paris it was agreed to form an EEIG called "Eurojurist", the members being from Spain, Belgium, Denmark, The Netherlands, Germany, Portugal, England, France and Italy. The constitution of the EEIG was signed and incorporated in 1989 in Luxembourg.

For the next years, the network increased in size and achieved providing excellent legal service throughout Europe to clients ranging from small, privately held corporations to multinationals. But soon it was noted that the concentration on Europe was a limiting factor, as clients demanded help in overseas regions. In 1994, Eurojurist Network was formed, doing away with the membership restrictions regarding EEIG´s. In 1996, the name was changed to Interlegal to reflect this change in outlook and service of the network.

Since then, the network has grown in size, adding members in North and South America, the new EU members states and continues with its chartered course of providing local excellence, wherever the client's business may take him.
